Eight Simple Rules for Men When Buying Gifts

“The manner of giving is worth more than the gift.” -Pierre Corneille

Men have often received criticism and flak over their gift-giving tendencies. It is one of the many conundrums when it comes to how males and females operate. As it is, it would always seem like women have the upper hand when it comes to gift giving—with each gift carefully thought of and considered before being purchased, wrapped and given. Men, on the other hand, would seemingly pick whatever they might deem useful and present it as a gift—though it is not for their lack of trying, but rather it seems to stem from the fact that most men are clueless when it comes to gift giving. In fact, an unknown author has been quoted to say that men can do their Christmas shopping for 25 relatives on Christmas Eve in 25 minutes. If you look at it that way, it is quite a feat—but unfortunately, when it comes to giving gifts that matter, it is not really just the thought that counts. Though men are not exactly as meticulous as women are in choosing gifts, this does not mean they should stop trying altogether. So, before heading out to any Ayala Mall, if there are any impending occasions that would you require you to buy gifts, take a gander at this list and apply it to your next gift shopping trip.

1.) Have a list ready

It is already given that you would be buying gifts, but instead of rushing through the aisles and buying the first most appropriate thing you see, take some time to think about the person you are giving a gift to. A good way to do this is to prepare a list beforehand with a list of names and things they like. This makes it easier for you to choose items off the rack.

2.) Have a gift budget

Do not spend more than necessary on gifts. Have a realistic budget of what you are willing to spend on gifts and the amount you are willing to devote to each person included in your list. Remember, the price tag does not really matter.

3.) Consider how you will wrap the items

Gifts are best presented when there is still an air of mystery about them. So, if you are done buying gifts from the mall, have it wrapped by their gift-wrapping stations which would normally be free if you purchased the things to be wrapped at the mall. If you wish for a faster way to wrap the gifts, however, buy some of those ready-made gift bags which come in various sizes.

4.) Always know the recipient’s size

Though they can always have it changed if they got the wrong size, remember that you are giving a gift and not an additional hassle. So, before giving any personal items such as clothes or shoes, remember to always research their sizes. T-shirt size can be something you can get a rough estimate of, but it pays to know the recipient’s exact size. It shows that you cared enough to find out.

5.) Do not buy generic items that can easily be re-gifted

When you are out shopping for a list of at least thirty people, it can be rather tempting to buy them all the same kind of mug or photo frame. However, if you do it this way, it would seem like you are giving gifts for the sake giving them instead of it being a thoughtful gift that comes from the heart. Do not give gifts which the recipients can easily re-gift to someone else and come up with something that is not overly generic instead.

6.) Give kids gifts that they are interested in

Before buying any little tot a gift, it would be appropriate to have a brief background of what they are into at the moment or your gift may end up discarded in a corner in the room collecting dust. Ask the parents of your niece, nephew or godchild what their little ones want and based from that; you can now find a gift. As a bonus, kids tend to remember who gives the best gifts. So, if you gave them something they really want, there is an excellent chance that you will be easily remembered.

7.) Keep it simple with jewelry

If you are unsure about the types of baubles, the recipient of the gift is into, opt for something classic and straightforward instead. The simpler it is, the better the chances of them wearing it will be. Or if you are up to it, you can bring them to the jeweler instead and casually observe which designs they tend to gravitate to.

8.) Shop online when pressed for time

Only go for this option when you are operating on a tight schedule and do it weeks ahead of the scheduled day of giving to make sure it arrives on time. Before buying anything online, always read reviews and see if it is a legitimate online shop. It always pays to be wary of online scams nowadays, and you would not want to waste your hard-earned money.
