15 Mistakes in Skin Care Causing Damage to Your Face

Our complexion is a reflection of our health. Developing a good skin care routine can ensure you look great for years to come, but you also need to avoid the following 15 habits which can damage your skin over time.

15 Mistakes in Skin Care Causing Damage to Your Face –

  1. Sleeping with Your Makeup On –

Neglecting to remove your makeup before hitting the pillow can clog your pores and oil glands leading to inflammation. It also makes your pores appear larger, increases your exposure to free radicals which leads to collagen breakdown and leftover makeup residue can inhibit the absorption of skincare products.

2. Not Cleansing Properly

Always look for a cleanser that contains antioxidants for protection and salicylic acid to clear your pores. Witch hazel is an ideal astringent and perfect for use after a hard workout to eliminate oily skin. It balances the skin’s pH level and reduces the look of pores and stops excess oil production. A small dab on a pimple can halt the progression.

3. Sleeping on A Cotton Pillowcase

A cotton pillowcase can add years to your face, especially as we loose collagen. Wake up crease-free and less puffy by using a satin or silk pillowcase. Make your bedroom environment a big part of your skin care routine by choosing a higher thread count, so your pillowcase isn’t contributing to your fine lines and wrinkles.

4. Exfoliating Away Oily Skin

Exfoliating too often can remove the protective barrier from your skin and leave your face exposed to harmful UVA rays and environmental toxins. Over-exfoliation accelerates skin-cell turnover, speeding up oil production. The average skin type benefits from exfoliation 2-3 times a week with a product containing 2% salicylic acid.

5. Not Moisturising Oily Skin

External factors such as UVA rays, pollution, and excessive cleansing can damage your skin’s moisture barrier, causing dry skin and an increase in oil production. Moisturising hydrates and nourishes your skin.

6. Not Applying Products in The Correct order

It is critical to apply your skin care products in the right order from lightest to heaviest, so they can fully penetrate the skin, and you reap the most benefits. Your aesthetician at your skin clinic can teach you how to use your skin care products correctly.

7. Sleeping with Your Hair Out at Night

The hair products you use can cause you to break out along your hairline. For an acne free complexion, pull your hair off you face and clip your fringe back before you fall asleep.

8. Not Washing Your Sheets & Pillowcases Frequently Enough

Wash your bedlinens weekly in hot water to eliminate allergens and dust mites. Pillowcases also accumulate residue from hair conditioner and scalp oil that can clog your pores, so wash your pillowcases more frequently if you have acne or experience occasional breakouts.

9. Drying Out Your Skin

Using products that are too harsh, especially those geared toward acne can dry out your skin. Always use a product that targets the blemish without irritating it or the surrounding skin and top off with your normal moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated.

10. Eating a Bad Diet

A well-balanced diet is good for your skin. A plant-based diet with lots of fruits and vegetables provides a range of skin boosting antioxidants and vitamins. Limit foods with a high glycemic index like white bread, pretzels, muffins, and bagels because they can trigger acne. Low glycemic foods include oatmeal, vegetables, proteins, and healthy fats.

11. Taking Too-Hot Showers

Hot water can strip your skin of essential moisture and oils, especially when it is combined with soap, leaving it dry and with an uneven texture.

12. Face Washing with Bar Soap

Most bar soaps have a high alkaline pH of 8-10 which can strip your skin leaving it dry and possibly inflamed. Healthy skin has a pH of 5.5, but when it is too high, your skin produces more oil leading to breakouts. Instead use a sulfate-free, low-foaming, non-stripping cleanser that is gentle on your skin and always mosturise immediately after to prevent dehydration.

13. Face Wiping with Shower Towels

Avoid using the towel you showered with to dry your face because you risk introducing bacteria other viruses to your delicate facial skin. Any products remaining on your towel that you used on your body can cause inflammation, clogged pores, and acne if the same towel is used on your face.

14. Forcibly Extracting Pimples

While tempting avoid forcibly extracting pimples. Your fingers and fingernails cannot only spread bacteria but also dig into your delicate skin and leave scars. If you squeeze the pimple, it could rupture inside the lower layer of skin and become a more noticeable and uncomfortable fluid-filled lump.

15. Not Getting Enough Sleep

A good night’s rest gives your skin a radiant glow. When you don’t get enough sleep, your skin becomes imbalanced and looks drier because your pH level drops. Your body releases more of the stress hormone cortisol which breaks down the skin’s collagen also making your skin look drier.
