Numerous tests and procedures are performed by ophthalmologists and optometrists during detailed eye examination. These can be as simple as reading an eye chart to sophisticate like ultra-powered lens to examine microstructure of the internal eye.
Comprehensive eye exams usually take an hour or more depending on the nature of the tests, doctor and overall health of the eye. Let’s have a look at some of the most common eye and vision tests conducted during the procedure.
Visual acuity tests
The first of many tests performed during a comprehensive eye exam are of visual acuity which measures sharpness of the vision. These are conducted using projected eye chart which measures distant visual acuity and another small, hand-held acuity chart for measuring the near vision.
Colour blindness test
To rule out colour blindness from various other procedures, a screening test to check the colour vision is performed earlier. Hereditary colour vision deficiencies are identified which alerts the doctor of underlying eye health anomalies that might be affecting the colour vision.
Although many different procedures are there to check balance, movement and performance of both the eyes in collaboration, cover test is the simplest. During the procedure, your ophthalmologist in Dubai would request to focus on a small object across the room while covering each of the eyes alternatively as you fix your gaze at the target. The test is repeated for near vision as well to determine possibility of strabismus, amblyopia or binocular vision.
To determine if your eyes can follow a moving object and ability to fix gaze at two separate targets altogether, Ocular Motility Testing is performed. Smooth eye testing is more common during which the eye doctor would hold your head still as you follow slow movement of either a light or any other target. Outcome of the test reveal certain problems with eye movement and strain that may be a reading disability, sports vision anomaly or any other.
Stereopsis (Test of Depth Perception)
Eye teaming which enables accepting objects that are 3D in nature and normal depth perception is referred to as ‘Stereopsis’. In one of the test, you would wear a pair of 3D glasses and examine test patterns, each has a pair of four smaller circles and you’ll have to identify which pattern matches closely against the remaining three.
To obtain approximation of the eyeglass prescription, Retinoscopy is performed mostly in the earliest of the entire process. The test is performed in a dimly lit room where you’ll be asked to focus on a large target which is usually a big “E” on the eye chart. And while you stare at the alphabet, the doctor would shine a light at your eye and flip lenses in a machine right in front of the eyes. The test would evaluate power of the lens for best correcting of the distance vision.
Detailed eye exams are recommended and performed only by an expert ophthalmologist to evaluate overall health of the vision and eye. Be sure to consult a good eye doctor and have your vision checked after every few months.
